Moving house has long been recognised as one of life’s most stressful events. It’s not just the actual moving of your possessions that can cause stress, but all the small details that need to be taken care of when you relocate. So, how can you make this big life change run more smoothly?

Be organised.

While some of us are natural list makers and will have every step of the moving process itemised, others will feel a bit lost when it comes to preparing for a big move. A moving checklist will help you get organised and stay organised until you are all set up in your new home. Here’s what you need to know.

Start Early: One Month to Go

Even though it may feel like you have plenty of time, when it comes to moving house, you can never start getting organised too soon. Some of the jobs you can tick off your list at this stage include:

  • Hire a Pantec truck and make the move yourself! We have 3 ton Pantec trucks available to hire and conveniently, they can be driven on a normal car license (drivers 25-75 years of age with a full drivers license).
  • Alternatively, book a removalist. You will usually need to secure a booking 4-6 weeks in advance, especially if you have chosen one of the more well-known companies. Booking in advance also gives you the opportunity to research and ask friends and family for recommendations.
  • Take an inventory of the items in your home and sell or donate any items that you don’t want.
  • Organise new school and/or daycare enrollments for children.
  • Start running down supplies in your freezer.
  • Book your self-storage unit in advance, so you have somewhere to secure all those extra items during and after the move.

Two To Three Weeks Until Moving Day

It’s never too early to start packing, and there are plenty of non-essential items that you can start boxing up weeks before your actual moving day. Books, rarely-used kitchen appliances, seasonal clothes, sporting equipment, spare bedding and towels, and games and toys are just some of the things you can easily pack away at this stage.

If you need moving boxes, don’t forget Hampton Hire & Storage stocks a wide range of house-moving materials in Ulladulla, including tea chests, book boxes, TV moving boxes, mattress covers, packing tape and bubble wrap.

Other moving chores you can tackle include:

  • Change your address. You can arrange mail redirection with your local post office. They will also notify banks, energy providers and government departments if you would like them to.
  • Arrange time off work if you need it.
  • Book a cleaner for your property if you don’t want to tackle those tricky areas like the oven and carpets yourself.
  • Arrange final accounts for utilities, phone and internet.

One Week to Moving Day

Crunch time! By now, most of your house should be packed up – aim for at least 90%, leaving aside the essential items you need every day. You will also need to take care of the following jobs:

  • Reconfirm appointments with removalists and cleaners.
  • Make arrangements for pets on moving day. Also, make sure children are aware of the plan for moving day!
  • Set aside important items that you will need on the day, including paperwork, keys, medications, clothing and personal items.
  • Make sure all the utilities are connected at your new residence.
