Believe it or not, there is an art to packing a moving box correctly. We know that moving is stressful and packing is often done in a rush and/or under pressure. However, taking a little more time and some extra care when packing will ensure that your valuables aren’t damaged in transit and stay safe during the storage process. These quick tips will help you pack the right way and save you time as well.
Choose The Right Box
Not all boxes are created equal. We know it’s tempting to pick up used cardboard boxes from supermarkets or dust off old boxes from the garage. However, these types of boxes are usually designed to hold light items only and are not suitable for heavy or delicate items. Invest in strong, secure moving boxes that are fit for purpose. There are even special packing boxes for tvs, bedding and books. You won’t regret it.
Have Plenty of Packing Materials
Once you have your moving boxes ready to go, you will need to gather your packing materials together. Having a central place, or a separate container to keep these items in will ensure they stay together and aren’t lost in the chaos of moving. Packing materials to put on your list include:
- Bubble wrap
- Scissors
- Marker Pens
- Quality Packing Tape
- Box Cutters
- Packing Paper (white paper or butcher’s paper is better than newspaper as they won’t leave black marks on your things)
Pack and Wrap
It’s always best to plan out your packing so your valuables stay protected and unpacking is easier. Pack by room and label everything. Heavy items should always go at the bottom of the box and lighter items can go on top. Wrap delicate and breakable items in bubble wrap and fill gaps in the box with paper so nothing moves around.
Seal Your Boxes Correctly
As with moving boxes, not every packing tape is the same. High-quality tape will be more reliable and reinforce the strength of your boxes to prevent them collapsing. Make sure you seal the base properly – this means placing packing tape around all corner edges, where the folding flaps join and diagonally for extra reinforcement.
